Gawthorpe Hall

Gawthorpe Hall, c. 1890. The hall was built in the early 1600s and was the home of the Shuttleworth family. They were one of the major landowners in the area and in 1850 the hall was altered for Sir James Kay-Shuttleworth by architect Sir Charles Barry. The tower was raised, the interior restored and a formal garden laid. Sir James’ granddaughter, the Hon. Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth (many knew her as “Miss Rachel”) lived at the hall most of her life. She was both a teacher and collector of embroidery and her collection at Gawthorpe is nationally known.
